This news is very short but nonetheless it could be very important. In my opinion, this article signifies two issues: (1) whether this move suggests a big transform of Apple’s strategy; (2) how will social platform evolve in the future.
For the first issue, it is still unclear whether this move suggesting an ending of eschewing social platform strategy long-held by Apple. However, at least it shows Apple is realizing how important it is to have strong ties between it and consumers, which could be an important way to keep consumers loyal and improve their experience when facing problems. This move is even more intriguing given that consumers might not love Apple as in the past several years because it fails to offer ground-breaking and attractive products. Before things get worse, Apple needs to whatever to keep its customers happy.
The second issue is about social platform. As the author reveals, Twitter has become “an effective customer service platform” since the day it launched the direct messaging. There will be no doubt that using Twitter to communicate with companies is much easier than communicate through companies’ official website or email. Therefore, there could be a trend that all companies open their service account on Twitter to improve consumers’ experience, and when most companies do this, it will be a bad idea for other companies not to join. Social platforms still have very large potentials remain to be discovered.
