Alex Stamos, the Chief Security Officer of Facebook, informed users on 17 October that Facebook will notify its users if it believe their account has been targeted or compromised by an attacker suspected of working on behalf of a nation-state.
Despite other companies have similar notification of hacks, it’s the first time for Facebook to warn its users of attempts by governments or terrorists to hack into their account.
The news comes as Britain’s intelligence agencies was legally allowed hack into phones and laptops. According to The Times, the investigatory powers bill would give Britain’s spies the right to hack in and control citizens’ personal devices, and use the cameras and microphones to secretly take pictures and record conversations.
Stamos said Facefook will do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and they strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.
