Yesterday, Apple announced the launch of several new products such as the new Iphone. At the finale of the announcement, U2, arguably one of the biggest rock bands in the world, revealed that their new album, Songs of Innocence will be released for free on the Itunes platform. Rolling Stone has declared it the biggest album release ever. Certainly the music industry has changed since Metallica’s squabble with Napster back in the early 2000s. Several questions arise from this announcement. Are artists and the music industry finally raising the white flag on album and song sales? Is it more profitable to release new content in hopes of gaining more interest in a artist’s back catalog? What do you think the effects will be from the announcement?
