During one of the presentations in my new media class this week, I learned that Facebook has gotten into the movie streaming business. In the movie streaming industry Netflix has dominated and now with Facebook entering the picture, should Netflix start to worry?
Netflix is only distributed in the US (with some streaming in Canada) and has about 20 million subscribers whereas Facebook’s advantages include the 500 million active users and global reach …. but do you REALLY want to stream a movie from your Facebook account? This article published today on Fox Business Week today, apparently Warner Bros. thinks so.
They have struck a deal with Facebook which will allow customers to stream movies directly from the social media giant for $3 a film. The day that this was announced, Netflix shares dropped 6% but later bounced back. We know that all good things come to an end but will Facebook be the end of Neflix? Should they be concerned by Amazons streaming ability? Or will a new company stomp over Netflix like they did to Blockbuster. We shall see (in about decade:)
